CD Projekt Red may have explored a smaller Cyberpunk project while continuing work on the distant sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. A new report suggests that the company once collaborated with WayForward on a game inspired by the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime series.
The unannounced project reportedly carried the codename Gemini and was described as an early research and development effort. Information about it was allegedly discovered in the professional portfolio of a former WayForward developer, whose identity was not publicly revealed.
Gemini was reportedly planned as a rollback-powered 2.5D brawler. The concept would have matched WayForward’s experience with action games such as Double Dragon Neon and River City Girls, while also fitting the colorful and highly stylized visual identity of Edgerunners.
The available details suggest that online multiplayer was part of the design. References to rollback-compatible architecture and online transport integration indicate that the team may have been building the combat system around stable network play.
The reported concept would likely have combined side-scrolling action with the characters, locations, and visual energy associated with the anime. A retro-inspired format could have offered a more compact alternative to the open-world structure of Cyberpunk 2077.
Development is said to have taken place at WayForward between 2025 and 2026. However, the current condition of the project has not been confirmed, leaving it unclear whether Gemini remains active, has been paused, or was abandoned during its early stages.
Separate findings reportedly indicate that WayForward was also developing an Unreal Engine 5 project during the previous year. Funding delays are said to have interrupted that production after the studio completed a vertical slice, with layoffs reportedly following the development pause.
It is not known whether that Unreal Engine project was connected to Gemini. The available information does not establish a direct relationship between the two, so the future of the proposed Edgerunners game remains uncertain.
The report arrives during an active period for the Cyberpunk franchise. A second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and an upcoming trading card game are helping maintain interest in the series while the next major Cyberpunk title remains in development.
CD Projekt Red is also expanding its other major franchise. The company has announced the Songs of the Past expansion for The Witcher 3 more than a decade after the game’s original launch, while development of The Witcher 4 continues.
For now, the reported Edgerunners brawler remains an intriguing example of how CD Projekt Red may be considering smaller projects beyond its large role-playing games. Until either company provides an official update, Gemini’s status and possible release remain unknown.
