Rumors indicate that the forthcoming Nintendo console, temporarily dubbed Nintendo Switch 2, is not projected to debut until the next fiscal year. Recent reports suggest that its launch may not occur until after March 31, 2025.

This information comes from Chris Dring, who oversees GamesIndustry.biz. During a recent episode of the Microcast, he addressed the anticipated timeline for the Nintendo Switch 2, expressing skepticism about its arrival within the current fiscal year.

As noted by VGC, Dring conveyed that no developers he consulted expect the console to release this financial year. He mentioned, developers have been cautioned to prepare for a wait. Several industry insiders are optimistic about a potential April or May release in 2025, preferring an earlier date rather than a delayed one.

According to Dring, there is a shared desire for an earlier launch for Switch 2 since anticipation for a new Nintendo console is high. He emphasized the need to avoid a situation where multiple major titles like Grand Theft Auto 6 and the Switch release coincide, creating overwhelming demand and pressure.

Previously, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed through social media that the new console would be officially revealed before the end of this fiscal year. He also mentioned that referring to it as the next model of Switch is fitting, suggesting that Nintendo does not plan to drastically alter its design approach compared to previous generations such as the Wii and Wii U.

Launching the Nintendo Switch 2 in spring 2025 seems plausible, mirroring the timing of the original Switch, which debuted in early March 2017. This timing could help to enhance the earnings for the financial year following the underwhelming performance of the Wii U.

With the Switch family nearing the milestone of 150 million units sold, Nintendo's position to introduce a new console at the start of a new fiscal year appears much more favorable. A revamped version of the Switch is likely to attract consumers more effectively than the unconventional Wii U did.
