S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is preparing for its first major story expansion. Cost of Hope launches on Aug. 20 alongside Update 2.0, a free patch available to everyone who owns the base game.
The expansion continues Skif’s journey and sends players back into the Zone for a new campaign centered on the renewed conflict between Duty and Freedom. The uneasy balance between the factions is beginning to collapse, creating another dangerous struggle across the region.
Cost of Hope introduces two large locations:
- the Iron Forest;
- the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
Both regions expand the playable map with new hubs, quests, optional activities, hidden areas, secrets, and additional threats. Players will have more territory to explore while uncovering new details about the Zone and its competing factions.
The campaign focuses on the opposing beliefs of Duty and Freedom. Duty wants the Zone eliminated because of the dangers it presents, while Freedom sees it as something that should be researched and potentially used. Skif becomes involved as tensions rise and the remaining peace between both sides starts to fall apart.
Player decisions will influence the direction and conclusion of the expansion. This choice-based structure continues the series’ tradition of allowing actions and alliances to shape the outcome of major events.
Update 2.0 launches on the same day and brings changes to the main game. The patch includes new content, technical improvements, major fixes, and a transition to a newer version of Unreal Engine 5.
The original release was built on Unreal Engine 5.1. An engine upgrade had already been planned for 2026 as part of the post-launch development roadmap, and Update 2.0 will deliver that promised transition.
It remains unclear whether the patch will substantially improve A-Life 2.0. This system is responsible for controlling NPC factions, mutants, encounters, and the wider simulation of activity throughout the Zone.
A-Life 2.0 experienced significant problems when the game first arrived. Several updates improved its behavior, although players have continued to report inconsistencies with the simulation.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Cost of Hope and Update 2.0 will launch across all supported platforms on Aug. 20.
