Wizards of the Coast is preparing for a leadership change after confirming that company president John Hight will leave his position following two years in the role. The transition will take effect on Sept. 1, after which Hight will continue supporting the business in an advisory capacity.
The change was disclosed through a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Hight joined Wizards of the Coast after previously serving as a general manager at Blizzard Entertainment, where he worked on several major gaming projects.
Following his departure from the president position, Hight plans to explore other creative and professional opportunities while remaining available to advise Wizards of the Coast. The company expressed appreciation for his leadership and the contributions he made to its teams and games during his tenure.
Wizards of the Coast emphasized that the leadership transition does not reflect weakness in its core business. Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons continue to deliver strong results, consistent with the company’s latest financial performance.
The company also confirmed that its planned 2027 video game lineup remains on schedule. The slate currently includes:
- Exodus;
- Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons.
Both projects appear to remain protected as Wizards of the Coast places greater emphasis on its most established franchises. Other games that were reportedly in development may no longer be moving forward as the company concentrates resources around its strongest brands.
Wizards of the Coast has begun both an internal and external search for Hight’s successor. Further details are expected once the company identifies a new executive to lead the business.
Exodus has attracted attention for its similarities to the Mass Effect series, combining cinematic science-fiction storytelling with new systems and ideas intended to modernize the familiar formula. The project is positioned as one of the more ambitious upcoming releases connected to Wizards of the Coast.
Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is also expected to play an important role in the company’s future game strategy. Its performance, along with the reception of Exodus, may influence how heavily Wizards of the Coast continues investing in large-scale video game development.
For now, the company is presenting the executive transition as an orderly change rather than a shift in its major plans. Its flagship tabletop properties remain strong, while the confirmed 2027 releases continue moving toward their planned launches.
